The following are excerpts from the NCBTMB Requirements for Recertification Handbook...

RECERTIFICATION
Once a therapist becomes nationally certified by NCBTMB, recertification is required every four years to retain certification status. Recertification does not require one to pass the National Certification Exam (NCE) every four years, although that is one way to become recertified. The other way is to demonstrate continued competency through continuing education. With this method the applicant must document 50 hours of continuing education during the four-year certification period. Two hours of professional ethics must be included in this education. In addition, all applicants must have performed and be able to document at least 200 hours of therapeutic massage/bodywork sessions during the four-year period.

ETHICS
All applicants must take a minimum of two hours of a professional ethics course during each four year certification period. All applicants must submit documents that verify the applicant's completion of the two hours of professional ethics course work. If the two hours of professional ethics are offered within another course, the requirement can be met if the acceptable documentation is submitted (i.e. certificate of completion, transcript or letter from the provider stating the ethics was included in the course.)

REQUIREMENTS FOR RECERTIFICATION
Individuals who are applying for recertification are required to have a minimum of 200 hours of work experience and 50 hours of continuing education. Individuals who do not wish to meet the continuing education requirements may choose to take the current form of the National Certification Examination (NCE) instead.

DEFINITION OF HOURS
Continuing education hours are based on actual clock hours of participation. Each hour is considered to be sixty minutes in length. When the fractional part of an hour is at least 50 minutes or more, the fractional portion may be counted as a complete hour. Any portion of an hour between 30 and 49 minutes will be counted as 30 minutes. Any part of an hour less than 30 minutes should be discarded. Hours are not awarded for meal functions, socials, or breaks.
